The California Hotel & Casino is one Las Vegas hotel and casino whose theme includes its chief clientele. About 70 percent of the California's guests come from Hawaii, and they feel right at home here amid the more than 750 hotel rooms island motif and the management's attention to cultural preferences - including laid-back, friendly hospitality. Hawaiians love a deal - in both senses. So the California has reasonable rates and a spacious, two-level casino with more than 1,000 slots, 35 table games and a full-service race and sports book. But, on the dining side, the theme takes a turn back toward the hotel's name. Just off the casino floor is the 24-hour Market Street Café, which serves sandwiches, steaks and Asian specialties. Also saluting Northern California are the upscale Redwood Bar and Grill, featuring steak and seafood, and the Pasta Pirate, which offers a fresh taste of Fisherman's Wharf seafood plus an array of homemade pastas. The California connects with both sides of the downtown action. It's a block away from all the excitement of the Fremont Street Experience, and the "Bridge Avenue" skywalk guides pedestrians over Main Street to Main Street Station, so guests can enjoy the dining, gaming and shops at that property, too. Hotel amenities include an outdoor pool and several retail shops, among them the Vegas 808 store. That number would be Hawaii's area code.
